These young girls, often from remote and underserved villages in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, are breaking barriers, defying expectations, and creating a brighter future for themselves and generations to come.
Where They Come From
The girls we support grow up in villages where opportunities for secondary education are limited or nonexistent. Many of these communities are hours away from the nearest school, making daily commutes on foot impossible. Not all villages have primary schools, and in those that do, teachers often handle multiple grade levels in a single classroom. Most families survive through subsistence farming, with limited resources to prioritize education.
For some, access to school is overshadowed by cultural expectations such as early marriage or household responsibilities. Despite these challenges, these girls dare to dream of a future beyond their circumstances.
“We didn't have a primary school in my village, so I had to walk an hour to attend one and cross a river that was impossible to cross in winter. Even now, I walk two hours just to find transportation to return to the EFA boarding house. Without EFA, continuing my education would have been out of reach.”
